Alaska Weather in August

Averages By Month

In August day temperatures range from 42°F in the Arctic region to 66°F in the Interior and Southern regions. The night temperature varies between 33°F at the far north end of Alaska and 50°F in the Interior and Southern regions. August is known for the warmest water temperatures of about 57°F.

Take the chance and try out Alaska’s characteristic watersports activities like kayaking, rafting or snorkeling if you can handle it in the cold Alaska waters. If you prefer to be on land you can check out the Sitka Arts and Science Festival but be prepared for changeable weather which is typical for Sitka as in all coastal regions in Alaska.

It is still peak season for mosquitoes because of few winds primarily in the Interior region and close to the swampy tundra. But do not worry, bug repellents are sold at every little shop in Alaska. In the second half of August the peak season subsides and an Indian summer with its warm late summer days and gorgeously colored forests arises.
